José R. Cot attended Tulane University in New Orleans, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree (Cum Laude) in Political Science/International Relations in 1985 and a juris doctor from Tulane Law School in 1988. Mr. Cot also attended the University of Madrid in Spain. He is admitted to practice in all the state and federal courts of Louisiana and Texas, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Delaware, the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third, Fifth and Eleventh Circuits. He is a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and fluent in Spanish.
Mr. Cot's primary area of practice is insurance defense litigation, specializing in maritime personal injury and property litigation, collision and platform liability, hurricane claims, commercial litigation, insurance coverage analysis and litigation, subrogation/recovery actions, construction defects, toxic torts and LHWCA. Mr. Cot has received the Martindale-Hubbell's highest rating (AV) and was listed in Louisiana Super Lawyers 2007. Mr. Cot is also a trained mediator.
